Crocheted Teething Biscuits

A dear friend of mine emailed me a couple of months ago with a request for crocheted teething biscuits for her little girl (who is about five months younger than my daughter).  I had all too recently gone through the horror of teething (these would have been incredible to have around had my friend come across the idea months earlier) and was eager to help ease the pain…for both of them!

I kept the pattern simple:

                             Round 1:

                                                      chain 12

2 hdc in the 2nd chain stitch from the needle

1 hdc in each stitch until you get to the last stitch

4 hdc in the last stitch

1 hdc in the back loops of the original chain in each stitch until you get to the last stitch

2 hdc in the back loop of the last stitch, join with a slip stitch

                                Round 2:

                                                      chain 2

2 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches

1 hdc in the next 8 stitches

2 hdc in each of the next 4 stitches

1 hdc in each of the next 8 stitches

2 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches

join with a slip stitch and bind off

(make two of these in each color that you want)

                            Finishing:

pair up the two wafers you just crocheted and single crochet them together around the edges with a contrasting color

i chained a loop of yarn to act as a key ring to hold the biscuits together…and it worked great!

The nice thing about these is that they’re quick, they’re easy, they don’t require much yarn (so you can use scraps rather than needing to buy a whole skein for a set of teething biscuits), they’re soft, and they’ll hold water/ice between the layers…hopefully lasting longer than a wet, frozen washcloth or traditional teething ring.

Happy crocheting!!

good luck!!

  1. So do you get these wet and store them in the freezer for when baby is sore? Super cute, am going to make for my new baby! 🙂

      • Hi Betty! I tried to respond to your question and just now realized that it might not have gotten to you. I used a softer cotton, but it was sturdy and didn’t have a bunch of fuzzies (that’s the technical lingo…fuzzies ;)). I didn’t want the poor baby to end up with a mouthful of fuzz or a scratchy feeling on those poor gums, so I tried to find a middle of the road option.

      • the cotton I used was soft but very sturdy. I didn’t want it fraying and leaving little yarn fuzzies in the baby’s mouth. It was a medium (4) worsted 4-ply yarn, 2.5 oz. I hope that helps! Let me know if you’ve got any more questions 🙂

  2. Hello I have tried to post this several times today, so I hope it works this time. I am trying to make this pattern and I am following it to the exact, but I keep getting 3 leftover HDC at the end. Is it SUPPOSE to be like that for some reason??

Please let me know if I am doing something wrong.

    • Hi! I’m so sorry you’re having trouble with the pattern. have you been putting more than one HDC in each stitch around the corners? This could be where the discrepancy is…if the corners are coming out alright and you’ve got the right number of HDC in each stitch, you could use the extra space for a hole to string the biscuits together or you might just try adjusting the pattern to account for the discrepancy. Hopefully that helps!

      • Thank you for getting back to me, I really appreciate it.

I don’t think I am doing that, putting in more than 1 HDC in the corners, maybe I am. I will have to do it again and see if that is where the problem is. I am just following the pattern, so not sure. I will try again to see how it come out, Thanks again
